The infoshot to help kick-start your week
Last Week
- Sabotage suspected as investigations are currently taking place surrounding unexplained leaks affecting both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, a major supply of gas from Russia into Europe. The leaks will no doubt worsen the Europe energy situation, and pose a severe safety and environmental hazard, as Danish authorities declare the area a no-shipping zone. The estimated volume of methane being released into the atmosphere is equivalent to a third of Denmark’s pollution yearly.
- The BoE intervened to calm markets after a massive sell-off in Gilts following the government’s fiscal policy announcements on Friday 23/09. The plan involves a two-week purchase program for long dated bonds, totalling £65 billion, and delaying planned gilts sales till the end of October. The move supported a number of pension funds which had been at risk of collapse following the sell-offs.
- EU countries approved measures proposed earlier in the month to contain the ongoing energy price currently threatening the region. Among the measures are a levy on fossil fuel companies’ surplus profits for the next 2 years and another on excess revenues low-cost power producers gain as a result of soaring electricity costs.
